These days, Studebaker is better known for its cars and trucks, but the company started in business in 1852 as a wagon manufacturer.
At 48″ long, this ‘Model 65’ – with original paintwork – is the largest of the Junior versions available for kids. It could be pulled by hand, by dogs or by goats. The company even printed a humorous Thanksgiving advertising card for a Turkmobile.

Being the market leaders in their field, these wagons were made for several decades, and many children enjoyed attaching their pet dog to one and being pulled around the garden. They were reproduced in kit form in the 1990s, a small batch being made by pedal car enthusiasts. But this example is an original. The chassis was repainted by the previous owner who owns a museum in America, but the body’s paintwork and Studebaker signwriting is original. Some brackets have been replaced and the body rests on the chassis rather than being bolted down; as you can see in the photos below, I removed it to photograph both separately. Judging by its condition, I assume it was one of the examples that was kept inside rather than bashed about by kids in the garden.
