This model of Gladiator is not easy to find, and what makes this one unique among the few survivors is its original transfer (decal) on the steering head. Gilt (gold leaf) transfers are very delicate and easy to polish off by mistake, so not many surviving bicycles from the 1890s retain this remarkable feature. The bicycle has been sprayed with clear lacquer to protect it.

The Gladiator sports a very rare men’s Christy racing saddle, and has a 30” front wheel and 28” rear wheel. It’s in good all round condition and is ready to ride and display.

The Georges Massias Gladiator poster is one of the most famous of all the ‘Belle Epoque’ cycling posters designed by French artists, and it set a style at the time for scenes of naked women with flowing hair alongside gent’s bicycles. A large reproduction of the poster can be ordered online.

A display of the poster alongside this bicycle would be the centrepiece of any museum exhibition, though the bicycle is in good running order so it can also be displayed at veteran cycle runs and events. There is no other surviving example with an original head transfer. So if you are a fan of Gladiators – or the world’s most famous artistic cycling poster – don’t you think that this might be the time to treat yourself to an exceptional xmas present?
