This is a BSA Gent’s Roadster Model 3D (the ‘D’ suffix denotes a freewheel with two ‘rolling lever brakes plus BSA 3-speed gear. featuring nickel handlebars, fork crowns and wheel rims, and priced at £8 15/-.
BSA’s are not easy to date accurately. This could be 1910s though it could be 1920s. It has an old time repaint and later handlebar grips have been added – I’ll include a pair of BSA grips on sale.
It has a tall frame, as supplied both to the Police as the Constabulary Bicycle and the army with or without military fittings. As you can see from the photos, I added military fittings when I used it to illustrate how cycle companies supplied their roadsters to military models. Obviously there are very few surviving genuine military model bicycles from the Great War (and I am very skeptical of any such claims made without proof), so if you want a WW1 bicycle – and you are tall enough to ride it, adding military fittings to this one would be a good budget option.
